Details. DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is an "always on" high-speed connection to the Internet. It is ideal for applications such as online gaming, videoconferencing (such as NetMeeting), and a range of other apps. Unlike dialup access, you don't have to wait to get connected, as your computer is always on the Net.

A few cautionary notes about DSL. Not everyone can get DSL; you're line must qualify. Generally this means that your home is within a certain distance from a Qwest "central office" (CO). Also, while it's nice to have a computer continuously hooked up to the Net, this increases the risk of an outside attacker probing or hacking your system. We recommend an external firewall (there are many cheap firewalls that allow you to share your DSL line with multiple computers).

Answers to FAQs. Yes, you can run servers on your DSL connection; just don't spam, host porn or violate any laws. Yes, you can use a Cisco 678 (and perhaps a 675) if you are a geek and know how to work in CBOS. No, your throughput is not metered. In general, if something seems reasonable to you, it is probably reasonable to us.
