FK flew from Seattle to Washington DC to attend a trade show.
While he was in town, he realized, it was an opportunity to
visit the Library of Congress and do a trademark search, prior
to attempting to register his company's name as a trademark.
FK arose early Wednesday morning, and decided to walk from his
hotel at K & 12th street to the LOC, at 1st Ave SE &
Congressional St. It was a 40-minute walk, past immense
government buildings of marble and concrete. Upon entering
the LOC he was met by a guard, who had him fill out a form for
the computer he was carrying. FK then proceeded to the
information desk, where he was informed that trademark
searches was not in this building, but instead in Crystal
City, outside of Alexandria. FK traisped outside and back to
his trade show at the conference center.
That afternoon after stuffing his attache case full to almost
bursting with literature, t-shirts and other trade show stuff
FK walked back to his hotel to unload and take a breather.
Upon arriving at the door to his room, he discovered his key
didn't work. He trudged back to the front desk, and was
informed that he had been moved from room 532 to room 933.
His belongings were transferred, he was told; here's your new
key.
FK took the elevator with the missing floortile by the door to
the ninth floor, and entered his new room. There were his
shirts, hanging on the same hangers; there was his suitcase on
the floor; there were his toilet articles, on the counter in
the bathroom; there was his prior haul of tradeshow materials;
there was a styrofoam cup of beer with a cigarette butt
floating in it; there was a rancid carton of old milk; there
was a mild but distinct smell of cigarette smoke permeating
the air. His shampoo, however, was missing, as was any sign
of a clock or radio. To make up for this, the TV was blasting
at full volume.
