Decency
Decency, eh? And who will protect us from decent folks bearing
hidden agendas?
Amusing as it sounds, the current communications bill before
congress containing censorship legislation masquerading as "decency"
is a lot more objectionable than the sexual content on the net it
would prohibit. But even if that were not so, I find it
interesting that this past year's explosion of content on
the internet has brought a much more obvious and pervasive new
net litter -- incessant advertising. Why is the outcry not focused
on this?
Being forced to read advertising everywhere I go on the net is to me
more objectionable than knowing that there is sex out there that I
can find, with a little effort. Because the advertising is thrown
up in my face whether I search for it or not; indeed, just using a
search tool to find topics subjects me to ads which I am not
interested in seeing.
Why is congress intent on prohibiting content which one must make an
effort to find, when there is more blatant objectionable content
being thrown all over the place? Could it be because the
advertisers have big bucks and lobbyists in congress? Is congress
scared of a new medium they don't really understand, scared of the
power of unregulated communications, unfettered free speech? Could
the cry of "decency" be a sneaky way of getting the first foot of
regulation in the door of the net?
Who the fuck knows? I just write this shit.
