The newer proprietary ATI driver works pretty well so I consider this issue closed. -- FWM, 26-Jun-2005
I bought two new machines configured as follows. I posted this message to
vip.asus.com at the end of April, and there has been no response yet. Anyway,
maybe I would suggest that if you're thinking of utilizing this combo to run
Linux: don't. There is absolutely no support for it, whether you're looking
for an off-the-shelf driver (open source or not) or of a more technical
nature to attempt to get it to work.
It's a pity. It almost works with some hacking so that it continues to initialize in V3 mode and with a default (not Athlon specific) kernel installed. The fonts seem a little ugly, and most basic stuff (for instance most productivity apps) will work. xcruise even works. ;-). But the really graphics-intensive stuff (including all of the game demos) dies with either the app folding up and going away or in rare cases the entire box locking up.
In non-accellerated mode it does work, but then, what's the point?

[Problem Description]
Sent as feedback to KB_ID=81693:
I am trying to get your ASUS Radeon 9200 card to work on a A7V8X-X motherboard
under SuSE 8.2 (2.4.20-4GB-athlon kernel). I am using the ATI fglrx driver
(naturally), since you people don't have one for download which I can find.
Unfortunately it sees the Northbridge as a VIA Apollo KT400, but in v2 compatibility
mode. To be precise, inside agpgart_be.c in agp_find_supported_device it sees
PCI_DEVICE_ID_8377_0 but find_agpv3_capptr fails. find_agpv2_capptr then succeeds,
but the driver is unable to to continue setup in v2 mode.
I am willing to help in any way I can!
